  • Charity Commission Takes Over Governance of Barnabas Fund Amid Ongoing Investigation

The Charity Commission has appointed interim managers to take control of the administration and governance of Barnabas Fund (also known as Barnabas Aid) following serious concerns over the charity’s management.

The charity has been under a statutory inquiry since September 2024, with the Commission investigating allegations of unauthorised payments made to some current and former trustees, as well as related parties.

To safeguard the charity and its assets, Edwina Turner and Catherine Gibbons of Anthony Collins LLP have been appointed as Interim Managers, replacing the trustees in overseeing the organisation. Their role includes taking full control of the charity’s operations, finances, records and governance arrangements, reviewing historic decision-making, investigating related-party transactions, recovering assets where necessary, and helping to restore proper governance practices.

The appointment of interim managers is one of the Charity Commission’s most significant regulatory interventions and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust governance, effective financial oversight, and transparency in charitable organisations.

Trustees have a legal duty to act in the best interests of their charity and to ensure that appropriate controls are in place to manage conflicts of interest, related-party arrangements, and financial risks. Failure to do so can lead to regulatory action, reputational damage, and disruption to the charity’s mission.

At Greydern, we work with charities, trustees, and nonprofit leaders to strengthen governance frameworks, improve compliance practices, and establish systems that promote accountability and resilience.

Prevention is always better than regulatory intervention. Whether your organisation needs a governance health check, trustee training, policy reviews, or ongoing compliance support, Greydern can help. Contact us today to ensure your charity remains compliant, well-governed, and focused on delivering impact for its beneficiaries.
