Naomi Campbell has appeared in a London court to challenge a five-year ban that prevents her from serving as a charity trustee. The ban was imposed following an investigation into Fashion for Relief, the poverty-relief charity she founded, which uncovered serious financial mismanagement.
Campbell argues that she was the victim of identity fraud and deception by former co-trustee Bianka Hellmich. Her legal team alleges that Hellmich forged her signature, created fake email accounts in her name, and handled communications with lawyers and regulators without her knowledge. Campbell says she believed her role was primarily to use her profile to raise funds while others managed the charity’s operations.
The Charity Commission maintains that trustees cannot simply act as figureheads and remain legally responsible for overseeing how a charity is run. Its investigation found that only a small percentage of the £4.8 million raised by Fashion for Relief reached charitable causes, with significant amounts reportedly spent on luxury expenses and unauthorised payments.
The alleged fraud has been referred to the police, and while Campbell insists she placed her trust in the wrong person, legal experts say it is uncommon for a charity trustee disqualification to be overturned.
The case serves as a reminder that trustees remain legally accountable for the governance and oversight of their charities, even when operational responsibilities are delegated. Robust governance structures, regular compliance reviews, and independent oversight are essential to safeguarding charitable funds and maintaining public trust.
